If you use Facebook Messenger for any reason, all your friends who use the service will also be able to see when you are active. This makes it a little hard to ignore people you don’t really want to talk to. Fortunately, there is an easy way to hide your active status.
Disable active status on mobile
If you – like most users – use Messenger on mobile, it can be a bit confusing to find where to turn off your active status as it’s a bit tucked away.
Note: You can find this setting in the same place on both iPhone and Android, although the menus look slightly different. We’ll be using Android for the following instructions, but you should be able to follow it on an iPhone without any problems.
Launch the Messenger app, then tap your profile picture – it’s at the top left.
Then tap the “Active Status” tab at the top.
Tap the switch to the right to turn off your active status. Keep in mind that doing this will also disable your ability to see other people’s active status. It seems that Facebook wants this to be a two-way street. If that’s okay with you, you’re done here.
Disable active status on Messenger.com
You can also disable your status on Messenger’s web frontend. Go to Messenger.com and then click on the three small dots in the top left corner.
Click “Disable Active Status” once you are in the Preferences menu.
In the next menu you can control who can see you active – if you want to be completely invisible, select ‘Turn off active status for all contacts’. The other two options allow you to be a little more specific. The second from the top lets you hide your status from everyone, with the exception of a few chosen exceptions. The third option is the exact opposite: you can change your activity status so that certain people can’t see you’re online.
Choose the option you want and then click ‘Ok’.
Again, keep in mind that turning off your active status also means you won’t be able to see other people’s active status.
