These are the new features coming to Windows 11

Windows 11

Windows 11 version 22H2 is coming out later this year and it won’t be a mass release but there will be several improvements and bug fixes.

At the Hybrid Work event, Microsoft officially teased new features coming to the operating system this year.

Phishing Protection

One of the new security features is enhanced protection against phishing. In version 22H2, Microsoft Defender SmartScreen gets significant improvements and protection from the chip to the cloud by combining modern hardware and software.

This new feature uses Microsoft Defender SmartScreen to warn users when they try to store plain text passwords in apps like Notepad. The feature also warns users if they accidentally enter Microsoft account passwords on phishing sites.

“These enhancements make Windows the world’s first operating system with phishing protections built directly into the platform and delivered out-of-the-box to help users stay productive and secure without learning how to be their own IT department.” Microsoft said.

File Explorer gets tabs, modern sidebar and contextual suggestions

File Explorer gains tab support in Windows 11 version 22H2.

Tabs support allows you to easily manage folders/folders and the experience will be similar to tabs in Microsoft Edge.

Explorer

Microsoft is also working on a new modern sidebar called “Home” and it will include options like This PC. The update will also improve the OneDrive integration in File Explorer, making it easier to find what you’re looking for, so you can see all your files in one central place.

You can pin files and make files as favorites, similar to Microsoft 365 or OneDrive.

In addition, Microsoft is also testing the contextual suggestions feature. This allows users to easily share files with their contacts.

Full screen widgets

As you probably know, Windows 11 comes with a widget board where you can read personal news and weather updates and work with web-based widgets from apps like Microsoft Store.

This widget board currently appears on the left side of the screen, but this may change soon.

During the event, Microsoft teased a full-screen widget board. However, it is unclear when the feature will arrive.

Proposed actions

Another new feature is ‘suggested actions’, which will be especially useful in apps like Microsoft Teams. With this new feature, you can mark a date in a Teams message and Windows will suggest actions.

For example, if you mark a date, you’ll see a recommendation to make an appointment in Microsoft Calendar for that day.
