Discord notifications have a distinct sound on the desktop version and it can get incredibly annoying if they go on non-stop.
To disable Discord notification sounds, start by clicking the cog-shaped User Settings button.

When you mute something on Discord, be it another user, a server, or a channel, you will no longer get notifications when there is a new post in that thread. If your friend sends you a message and you muted him, his new message is still in the conversation, but you won’t receive a notification.
